Learn the rules.
Play the story.

Midnight Sandbox is a tabletop RPG system built for stories that matter. One die type. No GM rolls. Rules that get out of your way.

One system. Infinite stories.

Midnight Sandbox sits in the sweet spot between rules-heavy systems and lightweight narrative games. Inspired by Blades in the Dark, built for combat and roleplay, and designed to run novella-length campaigns without bloat.

The GM never rolls

All dice belong to the players. The Architect (that's GM in Midnight Sandbox) drives the story through a resource economy of interruption tokens. No arbitrary fiat, just structured dramatic tension.

Spotlight economy

No initiative order. Players share the spotlight organically. Success keeps it with you, failure hands it to the Architect. Every moment at the table is someone's moment to shine.

Failure fuels comeback

Every failed roll earns a balance token. Spend them to nudge future dice, turning near-misses into hits and downgrades into survivable setbacks. Bad luck is just momentum building.

Built for novellas

Designed for campaigns with a clear arc: stories that begin, build, and end. Not an endless sandbox, but a structured narrative with room to breathe.

Themeable worlds

Midnight Sandbox is a ruleset, not a setting. The core system adapts to any world: Greek space opera, martial arts animals, dual-reality fantasy, or whatever you dream up.

Built for simplicity

One die type. A handful of core mechanics. Depth comes from meaningful choices, not from memorizing rules or crunching numbers.

d12

One die to rule them all

Every roll uses a d12. Before you roll, you choose: play it Safe (reliable, skill-based) or go Risky (all-or-nothing, pure luck). Every failure earns you a balance token, currency you spend to bend future rolls in your favor. The system literally rewards you for failing.

Worlds sculpted at midnight

Each theme is a complete setting built on the Midnight Sandbox rules. Same engine, wildly different stories.

Game designer, librarian, developer

By day, a Senior Technical Architect at Davidson College. By night, a TTRPG designer with 12 years of play and 10 years of design under his belt. Started with Mass Effect 5e, a homebrew conversion of D&D 5th edition, and has been chasing the perfect system ever since.

Midnight Sandbox was born from a simple frustration: crunchy games buried their stories under math, and lightweight games didn't give combat the mechanical depth it deserved. The goal was something in between. A system where the rules serve the narrative, not the other way around.
